Mauritania is a former French colony located in West Africa. To the west is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east is Mali and southwest is Senegal. This was the first land to be settled by the Bafours, in the fifth to seventh centuries, who gave up their nomadic ways.
The French then held control of country in the early 20th Century, and at that time there wasn't much to be had in the way of hotels in Mauritania. Discount hotels in Mauritania and even cheap hotels in Mauritania are now a bit more plentiful some hundred years later.
