Flags of Cyprus

The Cyprus national flag shows completeness of the island with two olive branches below on white. The Cypriot flag's colors were chosen with the intention of encouraging peace between two different rival communities that stay in the country, namely Turks and the Greeks. Both olive branches represent hope for peace and reconciliation between the Greek and Turkish communities. And white color in the background also represents peace. The color copper is very important in the flag, because there were large sizes of copper ores found in the country, actually it was the reproduction problem which made Cyprus flag yellow rather than copper color, which was originally intended.

Cyrus gained freedom from Britain in the year 1960, the then president of the Cyprus republic selected the flag, Mgr. Makarios, the flag was selected in a true democratic way, the country organized a flag competition where they received hundreds of entries, the initial flag was given by a teaches however, this flag was adopted through unanimous voting. Though original color on Cyrpus flag was supposed to be copper, later it was found it would have been difficult for reproduction therefore, the color was chosen golden, which can be reproduced faster and better than the copper color, this is why the map on the Cyprus flag is golden in color.
