The official adoption of the flag of Democratic Republic of Congo was made on May 17, 1997. Zaire was the former name of the country. There are two different countries that can be confused about since both have the word Congo in the country's name. These two countries are: Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter country is most of the time called Congo-Kinshasa, right after its capital. This is to distinguish it from other country which is the Republic of Congo. On June 30, 1960, the Democratic Republic of Congo got her independence from Belgium. The flag's design was influenced by the colonial flag being used before which were no stars located on the left side. |
