The flag is officially entered in February 1796 and in 1937 it was ratified.
The first flag of Netherlands, horizontal orange-white-dark blue tricolour, appeared in 1574, in the days of the fight for independence. Orange is a heraldic colour of William Orans, leading the folk rebelling against the Spanish crown. In 1581 Holland became an independent republic.
In 1630 the flag officially accepted in 1599 was partly changed: the revolutionary red replaced a monarchist orange bar. Unsuccessful attempts to return an orange colour on a flag were later undertaken, and in spite of the fact that restoration of The Orans Family, which governs until now, the red-white-dark blue tricolour remained. But as a token of respect to the royal house in the days of the triumphs and holidays people levitate the orange pennant of the monarchist dynasty. It is considered that substituting on the flag of orange colour by red had a practical meaning also: an orange colour on marine flags burns down quicker, than red. In the days of holidays the orange pennant of royal dynasty still rises above a state flag. |
