Flags of Ireland

The state flag of Ireland consists of green, white and orange vertical bars. The green symbolizes the revolution at the end of 18 century of the Irish people against the English colonialists. The orange bar presents the descendants of the English colonists from the 17 century (a group, supported William III Orans in the war of the two kings 1689-91). The white colour symbolizes the hope of peace between these two groups. These colours became national symbols. The flag is accepted on 29 December 1937. The national emblem of Ireland is a gold harp on the dark blue field. These emblems are used from times of the reign of Henry VIII in 16 century. The harp was chosen as a state symbol, when the Irish Free State was founded, however officially it was confirmed on 9 November 1945.

On 17 March the country celebrates the day of memory of the Ireland’s promoter, St. Patrick. St. Patrick, according to the legend, brought Christianity on the heathen island and banished all snakes. In honour of St. Patrick a parade settles down with songs and dances, Irish beer flows like a river. On 17 March is a holiday not only for Irish saint, but also for Irish soul.
