Flags of Lithuania

The flag consists of three horizontal bars - yellow, green and red. The yellow bar symbolizes a nobleness and honour; the green - life, hope and freedom; the red is love, bravery and the blood, spilled for the Motherland. On the Lithuania’s coat of arms a white knight is represented on a horse, which holds a sword above his head. This coat of arms is considered one of the most ancient in Europe. By the coat of arms of the Great Principality Lithuanian an equestrian warrior was select with a bare sword.

The representing of an attacking knight on a horse as an emblem of the rulers of Lithuania is at least from the times of prince Olgerd: a document with a seal belongs by 1366 depicting riding on a horse knight. From the end of XIV age a rider with a sword was represented on a background of a heraldic shield. From the beginning of XV age a heraldic knight became the coat of arms of the Great Principality of Lithuanian. From the middle of XV age the direction of the rider’s attack and the color of coat of arms was set. It was everywhere underlined that at the election of the Grand duke, when a dynastic line was interrupted, on a throne Lithuanian was elected. The "attacking knight" always was and remains the Lithuanian coat of arms. The national bird of Lithuania is the white stork.
