The king of Netherlands Villem I, becoming in 1815 simultaneously the ruler of Luxemburg, adopted in the same year the coat of arms and the flag of the dukedom, which look like the state symbols of Netherlands. The flag of the dukedom differs from Netherland’s only by more light tone of the lower bar.
The chairman of the parliamentary faction of christian-social folk party, Michel Wolter, suggested substituting the red-white-blue flag by the “Red lion” flag (Roude Léiw). The red-white-blue flag of Luxemburg was entered in 1972. But those flag looked very appropriate for the flag of Netherlands, therefore in 1992 a blue bar was done more light. In spite of it, many consider that it was not enough, simply to distinguish the flag of Luxemburg from the flag of Netherlands. |
