Flags of
Maine
The flag of Maine went through the essential development while it gained it’s current appearance. The first official flag of the state of Maine (1901 till 1909) presented a yellow canvas in the center of which the tall pine tree was located. Above the pine tree in the left side there was a blue star.
In its current appearance the flag presents dark blue canvas with the state coat of arms in its center. In the coat of arms there are a farmer with an instrument in his hand and a seaman with an anchor. They stay from the both sides of a landscape in the form of a shield. In the shield there is a pine tree, an elk that rested under the tree and a river – all of them symbolize the beautiful nature of the state.
The both man are symbols of the diligence of the local people as well as they are symbols of the work the people did here in the past. There is a yellow star above the shield, which represents the motto of the state “Dirigo”, which means “I Direct”. Under the shield there is a blue band with the same colour as of the river and the word “Maine” with yellow letters on it. |
