Flags of
Malawi
The flag of Malawi, similar to other flags of African nation, is a colorful one. It is as colorful as the country's rich history. The current flag of Malawi was adopted by this African nation on July 6, 1964, the same day it became independent from British rule.
Before its independence, Malawi was a British protectorate known as Nyasaland. The Malawi flag is based on the banner adopted by the Malawi Congress Party which was the party that led the fight for freedom. The leader of the Malawi Congress Party became the first prime minister of Malawi.
The flag of Malawi is a basic one that features three equal horizontal bands: black on top, red on the middle and green on the bottom. A red rising half-sun is printed in the middle of the black band. The color black represents the people of Africa. Red stands for the blood that was shed during Malawi's struggle for independence.
The color green symbolizes the country's rich vegetation. Freedom and hope is represented by the rising red half-sun.When the rival party of the Malawi Congress Party took gained power in 1998, there were rumors that the flag will be changed. The ruling party though decided to retain the original design of the flag. |
