The flag of Malawi is a basic one that features three equal horizontal bands: black on top, red on the middle and green on the bottom. A red rising half-sun is printed in the middle of the black band. The color black represents the people of Africa. Red stands for the blood that was shed during Malawi's struggle for independence. The color green symbolizes the country's rich vegetation. Freedom and hope is represented by the rising red half-sun. When the rival party of the Malawi Congress Party took gained power in 1998, there were rumors that the flag will be changed. The ruling party though decided to retain the original design of the flag.
