Flags of Moldova

The colors blue, yellow and red dominate the flag of the country of Moldova as these three colors form three equal vertical stripes. The country's coat of arms can be seen in the middle of the yellow band and of the flag. The emblem features the eagle of Walachia, a historic region in Eastern Europe. In the beak of the eagle is an Orthodox Christian cross. In one of its talon is an olive branch and on the other hand is the scepter of Michael the Brave of Walachia. The eagle also has the Moldovan red and blue colored shield on its chest. Within the shield is a stylized bison head known in Europe as an aurochs surrounded by various traditional symbols.

Because of its shared heritage with Romania, Moldova adopted the design of its flag from the Romanian national flag. During the revolutions of 1848, Romania and Moldova adopted a flag that features three colors as inspired by the French revolution. Until the Second World War, Moldova was part of Romania. The only difference between the two country's flags is the Moldovan coat of arms. The flag of Moldova was adopted on May 12, 1990, a year before gaining independence from the Soviet Union.
