Originally, the moon and the sun symbolize the ruling family. Later on, it became associated with the country's desire to exist as long as the sun and moon. The sun and moon also symbolizes the contrasting nature of the Nepalese people, soothing and calming while at the same time capable of being strong and brave. The celestial bodies also depict the dual climate of Nepal, cool on the Himalayas and hot on the lower portions.
Adopted on December 12, 1962, the current Nepalese flag is actually a combination of two flags that have been used for over two centuries. The country has only started to use the double flag in the 19th century |
