Flags of
Rhode Island
Rhode Island flag originally came into existence in the year 1644, the flag however was not accepted officially until the year 1897. Rhode Island flag background color is white, it includes an anchor with 13 stars. The anchor is in the color yellow and the stars surrounding the anchor are in the color yellow with blue border. All the stars in the flag are five pointed stars included in the flag to depict that the state of Rhode Island was the 13th state to join USA.
Inside the circle of stars and below the anchor there is a ribbon in color blue and has the motto of the state ‘Hope’ written in color yellow. There is a presence of anchor on the flag of Rhode Island because it is an island as the name shows and is also nicknamed as the ‘Ocean State’.
State of Rhode Island gained statehood in the year 1790, however the flag was accepted much later in the year 1897. During the battles of American Revolution Mexican War and War of 1812, soldiers of Rhode Island carried color white and blue, reason why the colors have been chosen to be included in the flag. |
