The color used in the carpet designs are red, white, black and orange. Adjacent to the red strip is a crescent moon with five stars representing Islam. This was the official flag from 1992 to 1997. On 29th Jan, 1997, an olive motif was added to the flag, placing it below the last carpet on the red strip. It is said to represent the peace-loving people of Turkmenistan and also its neutral status.
