It’s known as one of the seven sisters of the East. Brahmaputra which originates from Tibet is the main river valley in Assam. Its 80-100 kms wide and runs for approximately 1000 kms as shown in the Assam maps. At some places the river is as wide as 16 kms.
In the early 18th century Ahom palace intrigue led to the Burmese expansion. Soon the East India Company enters the fray and after the first Anglo Burma War took over Assam. Brought under the British rule, it became part of Bengal Presidency. Then around 1912, a separate province of eastern India was created of which Assam became a part.
Guwahati is the capital of Assam and part of the Brahmaputra valley. Assam Tea is famous all over the world. The British planted many tea estates that are still in existence. They are beautiful and cover many hills across Assam. Assam has some beautiful wildlife sanctuaries where the Indian Rhino can be seen. The tourism industry in Assam is very big.
Assam has a predominantly Hindu population. Other travel destinations in Assam are some beautiful temples across the state. The Kamakshi temple in Guwahati is well known and should be visited. The Assamese New Year is when people are in the festive spirits and everything looks bright and great.
