It’s separated from Ladakh by the Himalaya. The Pir Panjal range of mountains encloses Kashmir from West and south.
Kashmir was first part of the Mauryan and then the Kushan Empire. In the 8th century it was the stronghold of the Hindu King Lalitadtya. Later in the 13th century, it was invaded by the Turkish, Muslim invaders. In the 15th century, it became a part of the Mughals Empire. The last king of Kashmir was Hari Singh. After Independence of India, Kashmir became part of India, while some parts were annexed by Pakistan and are known as Pakistani Kashmir.
The tourism industry in Jammu & Kashmir is catching up after the military aggression in 80’s. Kashmir is a beautiful place and resembles Switzerland in many aspects. It has lovely valleys and meadows and the Himalayan range is spell bound. There are many hill estates which are very popular with the locals and all Indians.
Some of the most important travel destinations in Jammu & Kashmir are Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Jammu and the Buddhist Ladakh. Kashmir carpets, clothes with embroidery and wood work are very popular.
