Some of the important rivers are Kaveri, Tungabhadra, Krishna and Godavari. But it has many hills too with Ooty or Oocatacamund being a popular hill resort.
Karnataka was known as the state of Mysore. Tipu Sultan known as the Tiger of the South kept the British at bay for a long time. He was a popular King. The Vijaynagara kingdom was an important kingdom. At the time of its fall, confederation of Muslim sultanates took over that included Bijapur kingdom. Later it fell to the Mughal Empire and then the Wodeyar Empire was established.
There are many places to visit and tourism industry in Karnataka especially eco tourism is very big in Karnataka. Karnataka has 25 wildlife sanctuaries and 5 national parks. The ruins of the Vijaynagara kingdom at Hampi are on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
The Muslim architecture especially the Gol Gumbaz is very beautiful. Other travel destinations in Karnataka includes the cave temples at Badami are also well known. Bangalore, the state capital is known as the information technology capital of India with major companies like Microsoft, Wipro and HP who have their operations based here.
