The country has experienced a lot of turmoil and oppression by Foreign (mainly Russian) invasions. It achieved independence on 1918 from the Russian Empire again to occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940 and in 1944. The independence of Lithuania was restored on March 11, 1990 after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
Lithuania is one of the northern most countries of Europe and the world as well. It is bordered by Latvia, Belarus, Poland, and Russia. Its northern border is to Baltic Sea. The land contains glaciers, numerous lakes, wetlands besides a mixed forest zone covering 30% of Lithuania.
