The country assumed its current name, the Republic of Macedonia in 1991 and has International dispute over the name Macedonia with Greece.
It is in the Balkan Peninsula and mountainous borders with Serbia, Albania, Greece, and Bulgaria. As Macedonia maps indicate, the country is mainly a valley of the Vardar River but the terrain is craggy.
Strumica is another major river of Macedonia. The climate is transitional between Mediterranean and continental climates. The mountains have a mountainous climate. The climate zones in the country are: mountainous, Mediterranean, and mild continental.

A number of high peaks attract a lot of mountaineering tourists. The highest peak Mount Korab is 1,764 meters high. Other high peaks are Šar, Baba, Jakupica, Nidze, Deshat, Galichica, Stogovo, Jablanica, Osogovo, Bistra, Plachkovica etc.
