Manipur
The map of Manipur shows the eastern state as a small piece. It is inhabited by tribal groups of Nagas, Meiteis and Kukis. Being the border state it faced invasions by erstwhile Kings of Myanmar from about 900AD. However it came under British rule in the nineteenth century after settlement of a dispute over the throne. It was only ion 1972 that it got the status of a state. The state is divided into nine districts with an area of 22,327 sq. km. with Imphal as its capital. The topography mainly consists of mountainous terrain, continuation of the Himalayan range and a little of alluvial plateau. It is the North eastern-most state of India. It is also known as the ‘Jewel of India’.
Tourism industry in Manipur is not well developed. The prominent travel destinations of Manipur are the Shri Govindaji temple at the heart of the city, the bustling Khwairamband Bazar, Keibul Lamjao National Park and The War Cemeteries of World War II. The natural beauty of the Loktak Lake, the largest fresh water lake in the north eastern India is truly captivating. The ancient Bishnu Temple at Bishnupur is a testimony to the art and culture of a bygone era. All these sites can be traced in the maps of Manipur.
