It was in 1891 that Mizoram became a part of British India and it only became a state in 1986. The state still has a traditional chieftain ruling system in its villages. Mizoram is spread over 21,087Sqkm and has Aizwal as its capital. It has a predominantly Christian population. It a hilly terrain and as its name denotes consists of highlands. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the state. Due to its harsh topography and remote location the tourism industry in Mizoram is virtually undeveloped.
