Scientists believe that Korea was inhabitated around 30,000 BC when the tribes from central and other parts of Asia moved to this peninsula. In the First century AD, the first kingdom of South Korea was formed known as Goguryeo. It was invaded by Japan in the 16th century after which the Chinese conquered Korea. During WWII it was again occupied by Japan. Finally in 1953, Korea gained independence and the portion under Soviet Union became North Korea, while the portion under USA became South Korea. Currently both south and North Korea want to end 53 years of cold war and pledge to sign a peace treaty.

The architecture of Pyongyang, the DMZ at Panmunjeom and a slew of other quirky Kim-centric sights are the reasons to visit. The travel destinations in North Korea are very limited.
