The state’s history tell us that the state has primarily had Hindu ruler starting with the Mauryan dynasty and then falling in the hands of Muslim Sultanate till taken over by the British in the early nineteenth century. The state as we see it came into being only in 1949. The state of 155,707 SqKm has Bhubaneswar as its capital. Basically the state has three distinct topographical natures- the coastal plains, the mountain region in the middle and the plateaus. It is a river fed state all culminating in the Bay of Bengal. Mahanadia and Subarnarekha are the most prominent rivers among others.
Tourism industry in Orissa is well developed because of the Hindu religious places especially the temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri. The beautiful architecture of the Konarak Sun Temple and the Lingaraj Temple are a sight to behold. The exquisite carvings on the walls of the Sun Temple are almost ethereal. One can also find Buddhist ‘stupas’ from the Mauryan eras at Udaygiri and Khandagiri. There is also a wildlife park at Nandan Kanan. These spots are well highlighted in a Map of Orissa.
