The present day North and South Carolina were initially one single territory known as Carolina. However, in the year 1729, South Carolina, was officially separated from North Carolina. South Carolina was an important site during the American Revolution and the Civil war. In the year 1778, South Carolina ratified the US constitution; however it seceded from the Union in the year 1860. After the Civil war was over, South Carolina was reincorporated in the Union during the period 1863 to 1877.
If one looks at the map of South Carolina, one will notice that around two third of the state is covered by Atlantic Costal Plain, and it this costal area of South Carolina that has become a major tourist attraction. Other than this, South Carolina’s historic towns and scenic mountains are also quite popular. Numerous people visit the state of South Carolina. As per South Carolina’s tourism statistics in the year 2006 the state had around 29 million visitors from within USA, and around 150,000 overseas visitors.
