The region of South Dakota did not see much settlement prior to 1873. However, the arrival of railroad in 1873 as well as the discovery of gold in this region, attracted several people towards South Dakota. South Dakota was initially a part of the Dakota Territory primarily comprising of North and South Dakota. They were separated and admitted to the Union on November 2, 1989.

The tourist attractions in South Dakota include the Corn Palace, the city of Deadwood, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, as well as several as other national Parks and monuments. An important role in developing tourism in South Dakota is made by the Office of South Dakota Tourism. A variety of programs are being carried out by this office, with the aim of doubling visitors spending in South Dakota.
