According the maps of Tajikistan, it lies 3000 meters above sea level.
The country has a Persian history and was invaded in 6th Century BC. It was ruled briefly by Alexander the Great. In the 15th century, it was invaded by the Mongols and in the 19th Century was Czarist Russia. It remained a part of Soviet Union till 1991 when it gained its independence.
The tourism industry in Tajikistan is almost non existent. Capital Dushanbe has several building with rich ornamentation. The city can be quite dangerous in the night. The other destination in Tajiskstan is Khojand. Khojand is located behind the Fan Mountains. The Fan Mountains or Fannsky Gory are excellent places to climb and are only a few hours from Samarkhand & Dushanbe
It has managed to escape the ravages of civil war and is quite safe for travel. The mosques and the madrassas are worth a look. Also visit the Gumbekul Valley and Wakhan Corridor, which is home to Silk Route and Zoroastrian ruins.
